The Fountain Valley girls basketball team lost in a close match against the Marina Vikings with a score of 57-69.

The game began with Fountain Valley in the lead, due to Team Co-Captain Kayleen Amimoto’s (’16) quick plays and passes. Unfortunately, Marina turned the tables with their steals, turnovers and accurate shooting, finishing the first quarter with 8-16.

In the second quarter, the Barons were off to a great start. With great rebounds and shots from Monet Oncu (’18), the Barons were able to tie with the Vikings 18-18. Marina, however, got on the flow and the score was back at 24-35, with Fountain Valley behind. With a few seconds left, Hope Nguyen (’18) made a three pointer and ended the quarter with 27-35.

In the heated third quarter, both teams scored back and forth, and the Barons weren’t able to catch up to the Vikings, ending with 42-48.

Following the third quarter, the fourth quarter ended in an intense battle between the two sides. The Barons just barely missed a three pointer, and the Vikings scored two times in a row, 42-52. With great plays by Oncu and Megan Lai (’19), they brought the score up to 50-59.

With around a minute left, Marina scored more points with added free throws and the team secured their victory. The game ended 57-69.

“We were close so it was kind of sad but everyone gave a good effort and that’s all we could ask for,” said Team Captain, Ruth Nguyen (’16).
