At 10-2, the Fountain Valley High School Golf Team has experienced tremendous success, in thanks to a huge part by Captain Jesse Mooney (‘16).
Mooney has been part of the team all four years in high school, and has currently earned him a spot in leading the varsity team alongside Christ Feltman (‘16). However, Mooney’s journey didn’t start in high school, he started playing in 7th grade when his stepfather convinced him to give it a try. Mooney fell in love with the sport and has used the game to help guide his life.
“I love golf because unlike any other game, it is the perfect blend between mental and physical skill. It’s a new experience everyday and I never know what kind of obstacles I will have to overcome. Just like in life, in order to be successful you have to forget about the bad shots, adapt to where your ball lies, and focus on the shot in front of you. It’s also a great escape from everyday life and gives a great opportunity to have fun with your friends for practically the rest of your life,” said Mooney.
As Mooney got into high school, he started to hone his skills alongside his teammates. He has full belief in his teammates as he has been practicing hard alongside each player. Their hard work together has also strengthened their bonds as teammates, and as friends.
“ We have a very talented team this year that can definitely compete in Sunset League. Our chemistry is awesome and we all have fun being around each other. We are slowly getting better and better,” said Mooney.
Furthermore, Mooney is proud to be a role model and mentor to his team. Mooney has grinded his way to earn a captain spot, but he also humbles himself to be like any other team member on the team.
“It feels great to know that my hard work paid off over the years and I am honored to represent my team with Chris Feltman. I am happy to serve as a role model to the other players and help motivate and encourage them to be their best,” said Mooney.
Individually, Mooney has learned a lot over his years in varsity and has gained a lot of confidence in his game. Despite his hard work ethic, he also realizes that this is his last year playing for FVHS and has decided to enjoy every last minute of it.
“This year I’ve been much more successful in my play because with several years of varsity experience I feel more relaxed and confident in my abilities. Because golf is such a mental game it often hurts you to overthink the situation. This year I’ve learned to trust in my instincts and just have fun and enjoy my final year on the team,” said Mooney.
