On Thursday, Fountain Valley varsity girls tennis played against Huntington Beach and won with a score of 15-3. Fountain Valley girls tennis is ranked in the top 10 in Orange County and is undefeated in season so far with a score of 3-0.

“The whole team did really great today and everyone played their heart out,” Jane Nguyen, a no. 3 doubles player said.

Hanh Pham (‘18) and Captain Katie Ho (‘17) dominated all three of their singles matches. Pham won 6-2, 6-0, 6-2; Ho won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1. Despite being the only sophomore on the team, Charisse Vu (‘19) fought hard and won one of her matches with the score of 6-4.

The doubles teams showed an exceptional performance as well. Doubles no. 1 Vikki Nguyen (‘18) and Captain Clarissa Htay (‘17) won all three of their matches 7-6, 6-0 and 6-2. They struggled in the first round against Huntington’s no. 1 doubles, but ended up winning the tiebreaker.

Doubles no. 2 Brianna Lau (‘17) and Aozora Ito (‘18) fought hard, winning all three matches 6-4, 6-1 and 7-5. They started off a little shaky in the first round and lost many points due to unforced errors, but they stepped it up, winning the third round against their doubles no. 1 with a score of 7-5.

“I feel great. I feel like we put in our best effort and had a great game today against Huntington,” Lau said. “All our doubles teams did an exceptional job and performed really well.”

In addition, Lady Barons doubles no. 3 played spectacular, winning two out of three matches 6-3 and 7-5. Unfortunately, they lost against the Oilers doubles no. 1 in the second round, 3-6.

The two of them had a bit of a trouble with miscommunication, but they eventually recovered.

“We did get a little frustrated but it was our fault. We made dumb mistakes,” Nguyen (‘17) said. “It was really good at the end. Kayla’s volleys were amazing and her serves too. It was really fun.”

The Barons conquered the Oilers, winning 15-3. The real challenge, however, comes next week when Fountain Valley is going against New Port Harbor and Los Alamitos, two strong opponents. Nonetheless, Captain Katie Ho feels confident.

“By the way our team is hitting, I think we can win both of our games next week,” Ho said.
