On Oct. 4 and Oct. 6, FVHS varsity girls tennis team played against their rival schools, Newport Beach and Los Alamitos. The varsity girls tennis delivered stunning victories of 12-6 for both of their games. They are continuing their undefeated streak this season of 5-0 and is officially ranked #1 in the league for the first time since 1991, ready to make history.
“Newport and Los Alamitos were our main rivals this year and beating Newport on Tuesday really boosted the team’s confidence for our Thursday’s game against Los Alamitos. Everyone performed amazingly and did their best and it showed in the results at the end of both games with FV winning 12-6 against both teams,” said Briana Lau (’17).
Newport Beach and Los Alamitos High School both have strong girls tennis teams, and FVHS’ success in defeating both of these teams this week have lifted everyone’s spirits up tremendously, and the girls are now ready than ever to take on the league and winning the championship.
“Despite Edison being our rival school, Newport beach and Los Al has always been our rival school for tennis. So seeing that we beat both teams this week really put all of us to tears, especially yesterday’s game against Los Al, literally,” said Captain Katie Ho (‘17).
For both of the games this week, the no. 1 singles player Hanh Pham (‘18) and no. 2 singles player Katie Ho (‘17) played exceptionally well, exceeding at winning all three of their matches with great scores, and leading the Barons on to victory.
The doubles players also pushed hard, and succeeded in winning most of their games. They hanged on tight, and played a really close match even in their losses, most notably the no.1 doubles players Vikki Nguyen (‘18) and Clarissa Htay (‘17) who played 6-3, 6-7 and 6-0 against Los Alamitos on Thursday.
“Each team pushed really hard to win and it was no easy task. All nine players worked so hard to push through all three rounds and we finally made it by being the best two teams in our league,” said Ho (’16).
Nearing the end of their season, these tennis stars used their intense training to succeed in their games. The varsity girls tennis team has been having an amazing season through their hard work and effort. Nonetheless, these ladies barons gave their full effort into making sure this season is successful.
“I thought Tuesday against Newport Harbor and Thursday against Los Al were two of the most important games during the season. Both teams were a big challenge to us but we defeated them and won both games The team practiced hard to get where we are now which is first in the Sunset League. So I am very proud of my team. Go Barons!” said Co-Captain Clarissa Htay (’17).
