Every year, Fountain Valley High School hosts the Glow Show, an after school assembly for the football Bell game the next day against rival school Edison.
This tradition started in 2012 and has been a favorite assembly ever since. The Glow Show starts around five p.m. and is filled with food trucks, glow sticks passed out to the audience, loud music, and lights emphasizing the silhouettes of the football players and performers on stage. This assembly rallies up the students and staff members of the school to show all their spirit and support towards the varsity football team against their rivals for the big game the next day.
The coach and quarterback make speeches to their fellow students and make sure to leave an impact on the audience in anticipation for the big game. Most of the speeches end up in popular chants, such as ‘I believe that we will win, I believe that we will win!’ with everyone oozing out every ounce of school spirit.
The exciting event is put by Associated Student Body (ASB) and includes students from the dance team, orchestra, band, colorguard, and the pep squad as well. Also, the football team performs for the student body who cheers them on. The students show tremendous support and encouragement to the team by screaming their names and coming to the show.
“ASB started the glow show as another way to get not just the student body, but the entire community involved. Having a night time assembly is something that no other school around here has,” Michael Piepmeyer (’18), ASB assemblies commissioner, said. “Even before being a part of assembly, I looked forward to it every year. I just hope everyone else shares the same excitement that everyone involved has.”
By holding up their glow sticks and singing to the songs, the students join the football team on their night before the Bell game. The whole school comes together in in order to stand up as one.
In 2013, the glow show was one day before Halloween so the theme was incorporated throughout the night. There was a Halloween club carnival; the school’s clubs sold treats to the students. Also, when that was happening, the troubadours and theater members dressed up in terrifying customs and scared the students.
The glow show has always included food and music, however, every year ASB assembly commissioners try to change things up. In 2014, a very exciting and new event was added to the show. There was a theme set “Lift the Curse”, also, there was a fire performance which was definitely rare and unique. In 2015, there was even a rap made just for the occasion as a little extra to raise the school’s morale and spirit.
This year’s Glow Show is no doubt to be just as spectacular and full of football pride and school spirit.
