Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) was visited by a few native Japanese students on Dec. 8. While at FVHS, they expressed their thoughts and opinions on life in America as opposed to life in Japan.
“I was most shocked that the houses here were so big. I was also amazed by the students’ Japanese, and it’s motivated me to try harder in studying English, I myself have been learning for five years,” said Ayaka (’18). “I noticed that unlike in Japan, the steering wheels here are on the left. I’ve also noticed that compared to Japanese schools, the students here are very friendly. I’m amazed that the students here are learning Japanese, it makes me happy,” said Kousuke (’18). “I was shocked by the size of the food portions here. I was impressed by the students learning difficult languages like Japanese,” said Hikari (’18). “When arriving to America, I was amazed of how many cars there were and how wide the streets were. In Japanese high schools, we sit individually and in America, they sit in groups,” said Mako (’18). “In Japan, you have to wear a uniform to school, but here you can wear any clothes. I’ve been learning English since the first grade, but I don’t speak it very well,” said Kenta (’18). “I am amazed by how large the hamburgers and French fries are here. The high school campuses in America are large, and unlike in America, in Japan you cannot use cellphones and laptops during class,” said Airi (’18).
