Thursday night was Fountain Valley varsity girls basketball team’s first home game, which ended in an emotional loss of 38-68 against the Edison Chargers and some former teammates who switched over to Edison this year.
“I think everyone tried their hardest and honestly [Edison is] one of the top teams in our league and I think we did really well against them. Especially going against girls that used to go here and all the emotions and their skill, I think we did pretty well,” said Remi Chicoine (‘17).
In the first quarter of the game, Edison made the first basket, scoring two points, but Chicoine got the rebound and scored a three pointer right after. There were six fouls made in the first quarter and three points were scored from the free throw line. Esther Rodriguez (’17) and Megan Lai (’19) made a miraculous save and caught the ball, making the rebound before it went out of bounds. Tiffany Shimizu (’20) stole the ball away from Edison just about when they were heading for the rebound and made the point. The first quarter ended with a tie of 11-11.
Edison made a three pointer just as the second quarter started and were in the lead for quite some time until Monet Oncu (‘18) made two two-pointers, bringing their score up 15-34. They had a few fouls this quarter but kept good defense and shot some two and three pointers, bringing their score up and keeping Edison at bay. The girls lost this quarter 21-37.
Edison took the first point again this quarter but with five minutes 48 seconds left on the clock, Emily White (’17) was knocked down aggressively by an Edison player, leaving her on the floor in pain, unable to move her legs without some assistance. She was able to get up and was substituted out for the rest of the quarter. Third quarter ended with a score of 22-49.
In the final quarter, Fountain Valley was able to make the first shot with a two-pointer and steadily kept stealing more points with a comeback from White. Chicoine and Rodriguez made impressive three pointers, but they were still falling behind and making more fouls. This resulted in their first home game loss with a score of 38-68.
“We all got down on ourselves a little bit, but I felt that we kept ourselves together and just got through the rest of the game and showed our teamsmanship,” said Monet Oncu (‘18).
