Throughout the years, Fountain Valley High School’s final schedule has been periods zero, one and six on the first day, period zero, two and five on the second day and period zero, three and four on the final day, until it was changed for second semester last year.
The staff decided to establish this final schedule as concrete and does not plan on changing it again.
“There were several drafts drawn up. Teachers were allowed to vote and they voted for this current schedule. We wanted something that would flow and make more sense. This was something teachers preferred,” said Assistant Principal of Curriculum Eva White.
Students and teachers with zero period were annoyed how they had to meet every single day during finals week. They saw it as a huge problem because they believe a final couldn’t be accomplished in such a short time period.
“We brought to the department coordinators and explained why. We had students saying, ‘ Why do we have to meet every day?’ and I had teachers saying, ‘why don’t we have a final schedule’,” said White.
Students and teachers with zero periods seem to be relieved, but students who never had a zero period remain unaffected.
“To be honest, I don’t care if it’s the new or old schedule because I will end up taking my two hardest APs in one day since we take 2nd and 5th period on the same day. But I understand that it helps with zero period and since most of the people who had a zero don’t have a 6th period so it works out for them,” Betty Nguyen (’18) said. “The schedule is pretty much the same for me.”
Staff has commented that they believe this new schedule will remain concrete and become implemented for years to come.
“Someone came along and changed it by throwing in a study period. To me, it didn’t make much sense like if a teacher is teaching three periods of junior English. First, second, and third, why does my second period get an extra study period?” said White.
