In their final home game, the girls varsity basketball team lost against Huntington Beach 29-71.
Huntington Beach took the lead at the start of the game and got all the rebounds. Although Fountain Valley had good defense and prevented some shots, the Oilers always managed to stay ahead. With three minutes left in the game, the Lady Barons still didn’t make a basket, keeping the score 0-12. But right after Huntington made a point, Monet Oncu (‘18) made a two pointer and made another right after. Huntington made the last final points and ended the first quarter 4-16.
Remi Chicoine (‘17) made a three-pointer in the beginning of the second quarter and another three pointer right after. Emily White (‘17) followed up in this streak with a two pointer and it seemed to everyone that this was the comeback. The Oilers made a few more points ending the streak for Fountain Valley but the girls took back the lead with more three pointers by Chicoine and Esther Rodriguez (‘17). The girls brought up their score to 20 but were unable to made anymore as Huntington made the last few giving them the lead in the first half 20-34.
“We did really well in the first half, we were really hustling… and then it really went downhill in the second half, but we still tried. We gave a lot of effort and we’re in a hard league, so I think that all our hard work and time in practice shows that we have heart for the game,” said Chicoine.
Huntington may have taken the first point at the start of the second half but White took the ball in the own hands and made a two pointer right after. The Lady Barons were still determined to secure a win and kept fighting. Sara Lacher (‘17) made a three pointer soon after, but eight fouls were made thereafter. The middle half was slow, just back and forth control of the ball with no points being made by either teams. The third quarter ended 25-54.
In the final quarter, Oncu made the first two pointer but Huntington fought back with more points. Oncu with a rebound made a violent fall but got right back up strong to play again before a full team substitution was made. None of the players were tired and were still playing to their fullest potential. With Huntington having full control of the game, giving no open spots to Fountain Valley, White sneaked in a two pointer before the Oilers take back charge and ended the game 29-71.
“It sucks not winning any games but we definitely played our hardest to get up against with those really good teams. Don’t let anyone get you down because only you know what you are capable of doing,”said Sara Lacher (‘17).
