At the Huntington Beach Art Center, the 11th annual student art exhibit showcases works of students from the Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD).
Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) students won over 21 awards for their pieces including three Huntington Beach Art League (HBAL) winners and two best-of-show winners.
Vivian Tran (‘17) won the best of show award for “The Limerence of Coco” in Photoshop. Jeylan Baydemir (‘17) also won best of show for “Hiccup’s Tower” in ceramics.
FVHS snatched three out of the nine HBAL 2017 winners. Jayna Knott (‘17) won for her “Wiley Burp” ceramics piece, Samuel Truong won (‘17) for his “Untitled” 3-D piece made from magazines and Megan Mia Kim won (‘17) for her “Coralized” water color piece.
“[The HBAL award] is really cool. I never knew that one of my pieces would be here. It’s really cool,” said Knott.
The exhibit gives students the opportunity to be able to see their pieces in a professional environment.
“It’s very impressive. I was very surprised to see everything so professionally done. It brought tears to my eyes, happy tears. Happy tears as a parent,” said Julie Chaicharee, the parent of Verity Webster (‘17) who was one of the artists featured. “I was just shocked. It’s beautiful.”
Not only were students and parents proud and awed at the students’ work, but the teachers were too.
“It’s just unbelievable and as you can see, parents walk through here,” said art teacher Michael Eich. “The elementary school parents walk through and they look at it and they go, ‘This is high school? These are high school kids?’ and that’s what as a teacher you just go ‘Yeah!’. It makes you feel great inside. So, overall, just having [this event] is just awesome.”
The exhibit will be on display from March 24 through April 8. From Tuesdays through Thursdays, the exhibit opens from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Fridays it opens from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays it opens from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
