On April 13th, the Fountain Valley boys tennis team conquered over the Marina Vikings 16-2. The Barons put in a lot of effort after the loss against Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor.
“I think the team did exceptionally well with a score of 16-2. Everyone is definitely improving in their tennis game,” said senior co-captain Peter Nguyen (‘17).
In singles, no. 1 Justin Nguyen (‘19) won all three of his matches with exceptional scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1. No. 2 singles Ryan Trinh (‘20) and no. 3 singles Justin Pham (‘18) won two out of three matches. Both singles player were unable to win against Marina’s number one singles.
“I think the main thing our team needs to focus on overall, is to learn to stay focused,” said Pham.
On the doubles side, all three teams swept Marina doubles. All three teams won over Marina’s no. 2 doubles team with a score of 6-0. Aggressive plays were made by number one doubles team Jonathan Dang (‘17) and Vivek Savani (‘19).
“I think the team did a good job of being all over the net. By playing aggressive, we controlled the flow of the game.” said P. Nguyen.
Although the season is almost over, the Barons still have many things to improve on for the final matches, such as focusing on important points during matches and practicing harder not to miss easy shots.
“The team needs to improve on not hitting the ball in the middle and not missing the easy balls,” said P. Nguyen.
The boys tennis team have three more matches in the Sunset League against Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos.
“Because of our two losses to Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos, I feel the team is more focused and serious. We are trying to learn from our mistakes and practice to perfect our tennis. We will definitely win the rest of our games and beat Newport and Los Alamitos in league.” said P. Nguyen.
