The varsity lady Barons Field Hockey team played against Harvard-Westlake and unfortunately was defeated with a score of 5-0. Although the fierce and determined team fought hard towards the black team players, they were unable to make a comeback during the second half.
Despite the loss, seniors Jaida Rivera and Alyssa Lambert drove the team with their persistence and strong-will during the entire game.
Lambert and other team members suggested that the possibility of their loss contributed to insufficient communication. “I feel like if we were communicating we could have gotten the ball down the field more efficiently,” said Lambert. Despite this, from start to finish, the girls held a focused characteristic throughout the entire game.
They used enthusiasm and updated orderly directions, the lady Barons varsity team coach, Nancy Mendez lead the girls to empower teamwork and unity. “I’m not upset with the results of today,… but they did really well and we just [have] to work on our fitness now,” said Mendez.
The strengths on the field definitely seemed to outweigh the weaknesses. “I think our strengths today was getting hits-off quicker, passing [the ball] along the sidelines and getting open wide,” said Rivera. The girls are willing to improve and work together as the season continues on. They also have become more optimistic toward developing the team as a whole throughout weeks of practice.
