Every year at Fountain Valley High School (FVHS), more and more Barons drive to and from school. However, this year, many senior students found themselves unable to buy a senior parking permit.
Over the summer during senior registration, the line for parking permits was unusually long; when many seniors finally approached the supervision window, all the senior lot permits were sold out. Not soon after, permits for the church lot quickly sold out as well. As no more permits were available, people were then put on a waiting list.
This insufficient amount of parking permits was due to a miscount of how many senior parking permits were actually available.
“[Supervision] made a clerical error in how many parking permits were available. When seniors went through the line, we thought that we had issued all the senior permits. There were actually some remaining senior permits,” said Elliot Scolnick, FVHS head of supervision.
Many students who did get a permit to the senior lot or the church parking lot decided to park in the neighborhoods surrounding FVHS, a pressing concern for the school as neighbors complained about the massive amounts of cars suddenly lining the streets of their houses.
However, supervision quickly began reissuing senior lot permits to many students prioritized on the waiting list.
“We went back to the people who were the first in line in the church parking lot…Those people in the priority list have been offered a spot in the senior parking lot. As soon as we get done with those people in the church parking lot, we’ll be able to go to the waiting list if we have any remaining spots in the senior lot. It’s on a priority list. And then, we would go from there,” said Scolnick.
Despite these delays and setbacks in the distribution of senior lot passes, supervision has been working to issue as many senior lot passes as possible.
