Last Friday on Oct. 20, sophomore Abbey Rose hosted a movie night event to promote awareness for domestic violence at Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) in the bowl.
After seeing domestic violence happen in her life, Rose wanted to raise awareness to reach out to those in need of help. One in three teenagers are statistically in an abusive relationship, and she wants to prevent that as much as she can.
“I thought it was so important because a lot of domestic violence abusers do not get put in jail or get punished for it because there is no physical damage,” said Rose.
In order to create the event, the Human Option teen ambassador went through a long process. She tried collaborating with clubs to create the event, but she got most of her help from Eva White, Assistant Principal of Activities.
“Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and it is important to be aware of it because a lot of people don’t believe that it is that much of a threat. However, physical abuse is definitely a threat because it affects your mentality and confidence,” said Rose.
Many people, including non-FVHS students, came to the event and created a great atmosphere. The movie “Reviving Ophelia”, a film about a girl who begins and ends an abusive relationship, was played. Rose even made the food and drinks free of charge.
“It was fun. The movie had a good message and helped teach me about the dangers of a bad relationship,” sophomore Dakota Dreiling said.
Overall, the movie night was successful, and the audience was open to the topic of domestic violence awareness.
“I was happy with the turnout and everyone there was super supportive I couldn’t have asked for a better audience,” Rose concluded.
