For the first time in its history, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) is hosting the USA Biology Olympiad on its campus. This event is a test-taking tournament for any aspiring scientist wanting to show off their skills.

The USA Biology Olympiad began in 2004 and is a country-wide tournament. First, students will take a 55 question test at their school. If they make it within the first 10% of participants, they move onto the next stage which is semifinals. If you proceed to win the semifinals, you make it onto the national finals. This test encompasses a wide variety of biology subjects such as ecology, microbiology and physiology.

This tournament is a great opportunity for those who have already taken biology and want to have a chance to compete at a national level. This tournament will provide students with the opportunity to meet other like-minded scientists and help them show off their commitment to sciences for college applications.

The date of the competition at FVHS is February 7th from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. To register for the tournament at Fountain Valley, go to https://www.usabo-trc.org and click on student registration. Then, select our school from the drop-down menu and complete the registration form. After you complete this, there will be various study resources for you to use to prepare for the competition.

There is no reason that you shouldn’t participate if you love science because it is a completely free tournament. If you would like more information about the event or how to sign up, go see Mrs. Brown in room 227.
