Tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., student representatives from Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) are planning to hold a walkout in remembrance of the victims at Stoneman Douglas High School.
This event is in correspondence with the National Student Walkout Day, where students across the nation are invited to walk out of class at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to honor the 17 lives that were lost in Parkland, Florida.
Student representatives and seniors Cody Do, Lexie Geltman and Tiffany Nguyen are planning to lead the walkout. They are encouraging students to wear black in support of the victims and to come out to the bowl at the beginning of Baron Academic Time (BAT).
“We decided to plan this walkout to show the world that the students of Fountain Valley stand with Stoneman Douglas. We stand with their goal of furthering the safety of schools and their students, and stand with their mission to raise awareness on the issue,” said Do.
In an email sent out to students and teachers, principal Dr. Morgan Smith addressed concerns regarding the walkout. If students are to participate, teachers are not responsible for any work that students may miss.
“Students are legally required to be in class during school and they will be responsible for their choice should they arrive late to class or truant if they choose to walk out. However, we also support their individual rights and want to make sure they are safe no matter what they choose,” said Smith.
I’m not really clear on the specifics of this, but sitting in the bowl for 17 minutes isn’t going to change anything. Hopefully this will be a true walkout.
