ROP is a state-funded public education that provides career technical education to meet educational standards and industry needs. It is a course of study which combines classroom instruction and hands-on learning.
One of the many ROP courses provided by Coastline Community College is Sports Medicine, taught right here at FVHS by Jason Kols during periods three and four. The course helps the students interested in majoring in Health Science or Medical Technology learn about the medical industry and the skills required to succeed in it.
“In Sport Medicine, students learn all about prevention, recognition and treatment of athletic injuries. Students learn and get hands-on practice with real life applications. It’s a great class for students that want to combine their love for sports, with an interest in any healthcare related career,” said Kols.
Sports Medicine teaches the procedures needed in order to prevent athletic injuries. The course includes lessons on basic anatomy and physiology, nutritional guidelines and all types of injuries that may be inflicted upon athletics during performance, most commonly of the back, the knees, the shoulder and the elbow.
Using the knowledge gained throughout the year, students will acquire the skills needed to apply for future job within their interests by utilizing their critical thinking, communication and teamwork skills. Upon completion of the course, students will have obtained expertise to apply in the real world. Not to mention, taking this ROP class will fulfill the UC/CSU Laboratory Science “D” requirement for graduation.
“I took sports medicine because I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in athletic training after college. I can definitely say that this class has made me feel more confident about my career choice,” said senior Angelina DePersis.
