Astronomy Club is a new FVHS club that strives to foster students’ passion for space and unify astronomy enthusiasts.
Club President Delaney Schultz and Vice President Diana Naughton, both juniors, always had a personal interest in astronomy. Schultz once considered pursuing a career in the field, while Naughton was inspired by physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking. The two debated on creating a club to learn more about the subject for about two years before they decided to go through with the idea.
“Astronomy Club can help those who have a slight interest in the universe develop that into a deeper passion, or allow those who already love astronomy to continue learning with friends alongside them,” said Naughton.
Although it is Astronomy Club’s first year, they have many plans. They are also open to all suggestions from members and hope to improve whenever possible.
“We’re planning to hold discussions about astronomy and related subjects, have regular viewing parties and go on group trips to observatories and astronomy-related tours,” said Schultz.
In order to raise money for trips and equipment such as telescopes, the club will hold various fundraisers throughout the year. It is encouraged for students to bring their own gear if they prefer. However, the club also welcomes students who aren’t as experienced in the subject. All students are encouraged to join, whether it be those who consider astronomy to be just a hobby or those who are interested in studying it in the future.
“I think there’s so much to learn from the universe that surrounds us, and through this club I hope we can open students’ eyes to that,” said Naughton.
Meetings are held every Thursday in Room 216 during lunch. Come support Astronomy Club at their first meeting on Sept. 20.
