On Wednesday, the Barons varsity field hockey team tied Chaminade High School with a score of 1-1.
The Barons started off the first quarter strong with a goal scored by senior side midfielder Keilani Velasco. Assistance was provided to Velasco from junior center forward Madison Grogan and sophomores side midfielder Courtney Ngo and side forward Taryn Robinson.
Despite strong defense from Senior center defender defense Maya Kvesic, the Eagles evened the score 1-1 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Barons’ defense intensified against Chaminade but resulted with their first defensive short corner of the game. The Eagles had a few close attempts to score but ultimately failed as Kvesic blocked and kept the score 1-1 going into halftime.
Chaminade went on the offensive in the fourth quarter as the Barons received another defensive short corner and lost sophomore sweeper defender Drew Ruzgerian due to a finger injury. Despite setbacks, the team prevented Chaminade from scoring further.
During the final quarter, the Barons faced many close calls and gained another defensive short. The team focused their efforts on defense but also upped their offense. Robinson gained yards on the opponent’s goal and hit out wide before ultimately losing the ball.
The Eagles made many last-minute bids for a win, but the Barons refused to surrender and the match ended in a tie.
Despite not securing a win, the team was proud of how they kept the score even and kept motivated.
“[We] stayed one-one the entire time and never let them score another goal. I’m very proud of not only how I played but how my team played. [We] worked as a unit and really understood each other. I hope we keep pushing as hard as we have,” Kvesic said.
With last week’s win over the Thousand Oaks Lancers and this tied game with Chaminade, it’s shaping up to be a promising season for girls’ field hockey.
