On Thursday, the girls’ varsity volleyball team lost with a score of 0-3 against Huntington Beach High School.
The first set started off shaky with multiple errors, however, the Barons fought hard to stand their ground with digs from seniors Emily Svatstrom and Joanne Dang. Unfortunately, their efforts proved unsuccessful and ended the set with a score of 10-25.
As the second set began, the Barons came back to tie the score for the better half of the set. Senior Emily Yanigahara had three kills and junior Rachel Lucie scored two points with strong spikes to keep their score neck and neck with the Oilers. After multiple errors, the Barons again fell short, ending the second set with a score of 11-25.
“I feel like our team did really well. We had a middle on the other side, that was really difficult, so it was kind of hard for us to play defense, but I feel like as the game went on, we got better and started improving more,” said Svartstrom.
Having already lost two sets, the Barons’ chances at victory were slim. Nonetheless, our Barons continued to fight with a valiant effort. Yanigahara came back with three more kills and aided junior Jenna Peterson to build up a good rally. Unfortunately, it ended with yet another point for the Oilers. Giving it their all until the very end, the score for the final set was 14-25.
“They played really well, but it will definitely help us when we have senior Phoebe Minch back in and our setter Lauren Mena back in,” said Coach Taylor Packer. “We hope to get better. No matter what, win or lose, I hope the girls have fun and work on getting better.”
