Thursday afternoon, girls’ varsity tennis fell to Huntington Beach High School with a final score of 8-10.
“The game was not bad, but not as great as we had hoped. We did not play to our full potential, but we know exactly what to work on. We need to work on our volleys and putting the ball away. We were very consistent and returned well to our opponents, but we could amp up our defense a little more,” said assistant varsity coach Kayla Korhonen.
The first set ended with a tie score of 3-3. Singles No. 1 sophomore Jasmine Nguyen and No. 2 senior Ivy Le won their first matches of the game but the second set involved some mistakes and ultimately resulted in a score of 2-4.
Doubles No. 1 seniors Kaylee Tran and Charisse Vu won their first match in the second set and with a tie and a loss, the Barons continued to play valiantly, knowing that their chances of winning were slipping. Unfortunately, the final set ended with a score of 3-3 and ended the game with a close score of 8-10.
There were outstanding performances by doubles No. 3 freshman Nghi Trinh and sophomore Joanne Tran who won all three of their matches. Both singles and doubles performed exceptionally, but the Oilers proved a force to be reckoned with.
“We played really well. Despite losing by a few points, I think we showed a lot of effort. We grew a lot since preseason and I see us winning a lot of matches in the coming season. We had very few players and no substitutes so we were scared to get injured, but I think we overcame the setbacks and performed really well. I hope we win future games, show as much effort, beat the teams we lost to last year and get redemption,” said senior captain Tina Nguyen.
