Fountain Valley High School offers students the choice to take a zero period class. Although it is not mandatory, some students choose to take this class while others remain without it. Students share their opinions on zero period classes and why they think people should, or shouldn’t take them.
“I have Spanish zero period. It’s been a good chance for me to get my credits done and for me it’s not a big deal waking up that early. I’m taking zero through six so I can get another arts class and get the arts credits done. Pros are you get to get more classes done during the year. Cons are having to wake up early. Those are basically my two major ones,” says sophomore Sebastian Rus.
“I was debating on it [taking a zero period class], but it’s too early and I don’t like waking up early. I wanted to take an art class sophomore year so I wouldn’t have to do art credits junior or senior year, but I didn’t get around to asking my counselor. It starts so early and I feel like I wouldn’t be able to focus in class if I went that early to school,” says sophomore Emily Lai.
“I have a zero period, it’s Health. I think it’s a fun class. You only have to go once a week and other than that everything else is online so you can do it whenever you want. I’m doing sports so it would be easy if iI take a 0 period class instead of going one through six. Some cons are you got to wake up really early and there’s a lot of traffic in the morning because a lot of people have zero period classes,” says freshman Wadie Alam.
“It doesn’t fit in with my schedule. No [I don’t want to take a zero period class] because it’s so early in the morning and my brother goes here now too, so it’s inconvenient for all of us. Some pros are that you can get out earlier and you can squeeze in all the classes that you need. Some cons would be timing rides like if you can’t drive yet,” states junior Michelle Hua.
“If say it was coding I would take it, but for most parts no because I don’t want to get up early. Getting up early sucks especially if you’re not used to it. A good reason to take it [a zero period class] though is you get to leave school earlier if you have six classes since you leave at fifth period,” states sophomore Andrew Au.
“I have 0 period Health Hybrid class with Mr. Kols. I think you should take the Heath Hybrid class cause it’s online and you only have to go in on Tuesdays once a week. I just go once a week and it seems ok, but it’s really tiring. It takes me a long time to get ready and I have to wake up at 5:15,” says freshman Hannah Roberts.
