With a diverse student population at Fountain Valley High School, almost every student has a different study method that works for them. Is listening to music while doing homework or studying an effective technique most students use to get their work done?
“Listening to music [helps in studying]? Definitely. I think it relaxes you when you’re over-stressed. Usually [I listen to] things with no lyrics. Yes [it has shown to be effective in retaining information],” said junior Russell Pham. Photo by Elyssa Phan.
“Yes, for sure. I usually always listen to music. I don’t know, I think having something around you just makes you feel like you need to do something and when you have silence, I don’t feel motivated. Definitely rap or pop is what I listen to. Yeah, I usually do really well on tests [when I study with music].” said junior Abby Newsome. Photo by Elyssa Phan.
“I believe that listening to music does help you and that it can also take your mind off… It kind of keeps you focused and keeps you relaxed at the same time so that’s why I do it. I usually listen to lo-fi music ‘cause it’s more mellow and doesn’t have much lyrics so it won’t distract you… Most of the time I [listen to music] when I’m studying for a test and most of the time, I get a high grade on that test.” said sophomore Jason Truong. “Yeah [listening to music] does [help when doing homework]. It keeps you distracted from the little things and it just tunes everything out so I can just focus on my homework. [I usually listen to] indie-alternative,” said sophomore Marilyn Le. Photo by Elyssa Phan.
“I find it distracting for me so I don’t listen to [music],” said junior Nathan Tran. Photo by Elyssa Phan.
“Yeah [I listen to music while doing homework] a lot because if I don’t have background noise I can’t focus. Like I have to keep the TV on when I do homework or just have music. But it’s definitely different if you have music on that’s new to you because you try to listen to the lyrics and do your homework. So you shouldn’t listen to music that you don’t know the lyrics to. I usually listen to specific artists like Coco, but other than that, not really [anything specific]. I just try to go through my favorite songs. I sometimes associate the songs lyrics to information I’m studying so it helps a lot. If I remember the song, I remember the information,” said freshman Alexis DeMaria. Photo by Elyssa Phan.
