If you’re looking to utilize your writing skills for financial support, or simply enjoy writing, check out these scholarships:

 

1. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest – $5,000: Short story or novelette of science fiction or fantasy

Deadline: December 31, 2018

Original works of up to 17,000 words of any science fiction, fantasy, or dark fantasy are accepted. The contest is only open to those who have not published a professional story, and is split into quarters with three cash prizes each and a grand prize of $5,000. Visit here for more information.

2. NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Youth Essay Contest – $1,000: Essay on the theme “What Does The Second Amendment Mean to You?”

Deadline: December 31, 2018

Separate cash prizes awarded to winners: the first place prize is $1,000, second place prize $600, third place prize $200, and fourth place prize $100. Essays should be around 1,000 words long. Visit here for more information.

 

4. Unigo $10K Scholarship – $10,000: “Imagine a historical figure is brought to life. Who is it? What’s their favorite mobile app?”

Deadline: December 31, 2018

Submit an online response containing 250 words or less to the prompt. The winner will be notified by email or phone around March 31, 2019. Visit here for more information.

5. Helen McCloy Scholarship – $500: Mystery writing in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting and screenwriting

Deadline: February 28, 2019

An application form must be submitted, along with a 300- to 500-word essay on your interest in mystery writing and the sample of writing to be judged. Visit here for more information.

6. Unigo Sweet & Simple Scholarship – $1,500: “Not every gift has to be expensive or extravagant. In fact, sometimes it’s the sweet and simple things that make a real difference in our lives. Think back and tell us about something you received as a gift and why it meant so much to you.”

Deadline: February 28, 2019

7. Horror Writers Association Scholarship – $2,500: Scholarship to help develop professional horror writers
