Rollin’ Creamery
Rollin’ Creamery offers a large selection of Thai style ice cream rolls, ice cream which starts off in a liquid form and then poured onto a cold steel plate and beat until the mixture becomes solid. The restaurant offers a variety of different beverages and “Rolled Tacos”, rolled ice cream that is served in a waffle cone it the shape of a taco shell.
We ordered the Cà Phê Sữa Đá, a popular flavor inspired by Vietnamese iced coffee, topped with whipped cream, coffee powder and coffee jelly. Being that the desert is rolled fresh to order, the ice cream gives a dense, yet creamy, texture that melts into your mouth upon contact. The flavor stays true to its origins and has the earthy, bitter coffee taste mixed with the sweetness of traditional Vietnamese coffee.
Afters
Since its opening in 2014, Afters Ice Cream has established Fountain Valley as the starting point for the “Ice Cream Movement” that changed standards in the desert restaurant industry forever. Known for their milky bun, a donut stuffed with ice cream, Afters has over 20 locations in California. With unique flavors like Cookie Monster and Jasmine Milk Tea, your taste buds will never be bored.
We tasted the popular Jasmine Milk Tea for $4 in a cup. With a nice lavender hue to it, the Jasmine Milk Tea isn’t overly sweet and is perfect for tea lovers. Its flavor gradually increases as you continue to eat it. Dense and creamy, the aroma of jasmine and lavender comes out. You can see that real jasmine milk tea was used.
Drill’d Ice Cream
Drill’d Ice Cream allows customers full control over the flavor profile of their order. First, the customer chooses a base flavor such as vanilla. They may then add mix-ins, toppings and/or a drizzle. If you have trouble customizing your order, you can try one of their many specialities. The store is filled with picturistic background perfect for Instagram photos.
We started with a vanilla base with Frosted Flakes mixed in, topped with bananas and finished off with a condensed milk drizzle. It’s expensive compared to other locations, with $7 for a custom order and $7.50 to $8.50 for a specialty. Although the idea appears unique, the taste is exactly as you would expect: cereal with vanilla ice cream. The cereal crunchiness contrasts the plain vanilla base, but the texture is grainy. You could get the same flavor profile if you blended a tub of ice cream and box of cereal from Stater Bros. at home.
