Every morning you rush out the door. There’s never enough time to get ready and eat breakfast. Luckily, you go to FVHS, and there’s so much FVHS has to offer, including a cafeteria that serves breakfast. We are two students and here’s our take on school breakfast.

Tater tots: 2/10

Please bring back the old tater tots. These are more like tater cakes, tater pucks. It tastes like what the Irish would’ve eaten before they discovered spices.

Update 9/30/2019 7:00 A.M PST: Junanna finds the old tater tots in the cafeteria once again and is overjoyed with happiness.

Powdered Donuts: 3/10

Powdered Mini Donuts are too grainy and dry. We can feel every fiber of the donut whenever we eat it. It doesn’t taste like a donut, but more like bread you left out for too long and went stale. The donuts are  too crumbly and the powdered sugar gets everywhere on your face and clothing. Not a good experience if you’re wearing black clothing.

Breakfast Pizza: 3.5/10
Pizza isn’t healthy, periodt. Nonetheless, we’re not one to judge and it met our expectations, which weren’t very high. The pizza came in a plastic wrapper and looked like a wannabe Hot Pocket. The biggest problem was the dough. It’s squishy and soggy, and the aftertaste lingered like an annoying friend. Fake and sour. Overall a bad experience.

Breakfast Biscuit: 4/10

We had high hopes for this. Unfortunately, it did not meet our Jimmy Dean expectations. The biscuit is too dry and it sticks to the roof of your mouth. The patty is like a solid mass of salted water. It completely overwhelms the egg and what little we could taste of the egg could be defined in one word: artificial. The cheese clings to the sandwich in a rubbery embrace. Reminiscent of McDonald’s McGriddle, we believe it’s too heavy for breakfast. Junanna was gassy after eating breakfast biscuit, but now that we mention it, Junanna is often gassy after any breakfast.

Cocoa Chip Benefit Bar: 5/10
Too sweet and too chocolate-y. It tastes more like a dessert item than a breakfast item. Everyone loves chocolate, but it overwhelms your taste buds with sweetness. There is too much chocolate packed into this small breakfast item, so you might as well just eat a chocolate bar instead.

Banana Chunk Benefit Bar: 6.5/10
Junanna: The banana leaves a weird aftertaste in my mouth. Not my personal favorite, but I understand why people would like it. It combines two classic favorites: chocolate and banana.

Katy: I personally would never get this because I don’t like banana.

Bagel: 7/10

We don’t think it tastes too bad; it’s just your average bagel. Not the best quality, dough. It gets a little soggy if you leave it in the bag for too long. You might want to down this one with some water because it makes your throat pretty dry. The cream cheese is store bought and generic. This is an okay option if you’re craving something a little more savory.

Honey Bun: 7/10

Junanna: Truly an outer body experience. I’m not sure about the nutritional value of it, but it’s damn delicious. It’s the breakfast love child of a glazed donut and cinnamon bun. It’s not too sweet, but be warned: it’s very sticky.

Katy: I personally think it’s too sweet for my stomach in the morning, but it’s definitely a sweet kick to start off your day. It gives you quite the amount of sugar and energy, yet it does wear off quickly and is not as filling as other alternatives.

Double Chocolate Chip Muffin: 8.5/10

A pinch too sweet. Other than that, it’s a pleasant muffin. Junanna especially likes eating the top part because the bottom part is too crumbly. Once you open the plastic wrapper, it just falls all over the place, which is too messy of a situation to deal in the early morning. However, the taste is pretty decent and we prefer this over the other sweet options.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Benefit Bar: 9.5/10

Shall I compare thee to a chocolate chip cookie with lots of fiber? Though a little too sweet, this is our usual. Even the guy who works in the cafeteria knows we always get this. It is best to eat warm because it gets harder later on. Junanna thinks it makes you poop a lot because of the fiber, but overall it’s a well-balanced breakfast item that is good for your digestive system.

Yogurt Parfait: 9.5/10

This by far one of the better items the offer in the cafeteria. The yogurt is not too overwhelmingly sweet and has enough berries to give it a kick of tartness. The crunchiness of the granola compliments the smooth yogurt. It’s an item filled with many flavors and textures, as well as looking “healthier” than the other sweet options.

The cold cereal options, Uncrustables, breakfast Tornado and Pop-tarts were excluded from this review.
