Today, in their final game of the season, the boys’ varsity basketball played against the Marina Vikings. It was also their Senior night where they honored senior Jared Habibeh, the only senior on the team.
“Jared always worked hard and he’s an outstanding kid. This is a special night for him. [To Jared], thank you for your four years in this program, ” said Coach Bryant.
After the heartwarming ceremony, the Barons had a strong start to the game with junior Preston Amarillo assisting junior Jeremiah Davis for a layup to open the game. Back to back three-pointers were shot by Habibeh and Amarillo for a tie score of 12-12, but the Vikings made an amazing half-court shot to close the first quarter, bringing the score to 12-15. In the second quarter, sophomore Roddie Anderson played an impressive full court press which allowed him to make key steals for multiple layups, but unfortunately, the first half ended with a score of 27-31.
Refusing to give in, the Barons opened the second half with a three-pointer from junior Aden Casarez. After a long battle from both teams, the Barons were able to bring the game to a tie with a score of 53-53. Casarez made multiple three-pointers, but they were all reciprocated by the opposing team which made for an exciting fight for the lead. Near the end of the second half, the Barons recieved a technical foul and the Vikings made two free throws, bringing the score to 62-60. An intense battle broke out with the Barons fighting for a comeback. With seven seconds on the clock, Casarez made a three-pointer bringing the score to 66-64. The Barons held out to defeat the Vikings.
“I think we did well with hanging in there; we didn’t play particularly well, but I think overall, the guys stuck in there and executed well to give themselves a chance to win,” said Coach Bryant. “This win was big because it showed our character, our resilience, and it showed the poise of the team.”
Before the game began, Coach Bryant announced that the boys’ basketball varsity team made the CIF playoffs so be sure to come out and support your Barons!
