On Thursday, the girls’ varsity basketball team lost against the Patriots, with a final score of 32-47 in their first CIF playoff game.

They started off the game strong with a three point shot for the Barons. But after many unexpected three-point shots from the opposing team, they fell behind going into the second quarter. Key rebounds were made by sophomore Zoe Ziegler and the Barons were able to hold off the Patriots until senior Kat Luu scored a three point shot. Although she and the rest of her teammates showed great effort, the first half ended with a score of 15-32.

Although the Patriots had a strong lead over the Barons, the girls refused to give up and continued to play hard with Luu scoring both of her free throws and another three-pointer. They also played stronger defense which helped close the gap going into the third quarter.

Junior Caitlin Okawa opened up the third quarter with a layup and Luu made another three, but it was quickly reciprocated by the opposing team. In the last minute, senior Tiffany Shimizu made a three-point shot and Luu made both of her free throws in the last few seconds, but unfortunately, it was not enough as the Patriots won with a final score of 32-47.

Overall, key players included Luu who scored who scored all of her free throws and a total of three three-point shots. Ziegler defended the basket well and had many rebounds. The team played well together, but they will not be continuing in the CIF playoffs.

“Even though we didn’t come out on top, I know that the team gave it our all. Our defense was at its best at the end of the game,” said Luu. “This has been the best season that our school has had in a long time. It’s the first league championship we’ve had in years and I’m just glad to have been a part of it and was able to make CIF.”
