George Floyd, Elijah McClain and Breonna Taylor are three of the most recognizable names and faces of the revival of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Floyd, known as “Big Floyd” by his friends and family, worked as a bouncer and truck driver in Minnesota. McClain was a 23-year-old massage therapist from Colorado who loved animals. Taylor was an emergency medical technician from Kentucky who put herself at risk to help others.
As different as these three individuals were, they had two things in common: they were African American, and they were murdered by police officers.
None of them deserved to be killed. No one deserves to fear being targeted by those sworn to protect us just for the color of their skin. This, however, is the reality that Black people face every day in the United States. It is disgusting that police officers are able to harass, assault and even kill citizens and face zero to few light repercussions.
Police brutality against Black people is why the Black Lives Matter movement began in 2013. We need to use our voices to ensure police brutality ends, and to take a step closer to reaching equality between all people regardless of their skin color.
