Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joseph Biden declared today that Kamala Harris will be his running mate in November, a long-awaited announcement that comes only a week before the Democratic National Convention.
Harris will be the third woman and the first woman of color in U.S. history on the ticket of a major party, fulfilling Biden’s March debate pledge to run with a woman as his vice president. The Vice Presidential Debate will be held on October 7th and will be the only debate between Harris and incumbent Mike Pence.
Harris is the junior United States Senator from California, having served since 2017. She ran for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential primaries, but dropped out before any voting occurred. Harris also served as the Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017. Her time in that office, and her record on criminal justice, was a source of criticism from some of her opponents in the primaries.
