United States President Donald Trump has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for his role in the peace deals between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and between Serbia and Kosovo.
President Trump was first nominated by Norwegian politician Christain Tybring-Gjedde for his role in securing a peace deal between Israel and the UAE, the third peace deal between Israel and a Middle Eastern country since Israel declared independence in 1948. This deal works to lower hostilities in the region.
While Tyrbing-Gjedde says he isn’t a big Trump supporter, he still believes that Trump deserves the prize.
“For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other peace prize nominees,” Tybring-Gjedde told Fox News. “I’m not a big Trump supporter, the committee should look at the facts and judge him on the facts, not the way he behaves.”
Tybring-Gjedde had also nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for his role in the peace negotiations of North Korea and South Korea; however, Trump did not win.
Swedish Parliament member Magnus Jacobsson was the second person to nominate Trump for the 2021 prize.
Jacobsson’s nomination was for Trump’s role in successfully negotiating a peace deal between Serbia and Kosovo. This agreement, which normalizes the economic relations between the two countries, has Serbia move their embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and has Kosovo recognize Israel, was announced just weeks after the first deal between Israel and the UAE. After agreement on the peace deal, Hashim Thaci, the president of Kosovo, announced that he would give Trump the Order of Freedom, one of the country’s highest honors.
The signings for both Israeli deals took place on Sept. 15 in a ceremony at the White House, Reuters reported.
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in October 2021. Trump is one of 318 candidates in the running for this year’s prize. Anyone within certain criteria, such as heads of state, national politicians, university professors and previous recipients, can nominate someone.
Former United States presidents who won the award include Barack Obama (2009), Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1920) and Jimmy Carter (2002). If Trump wins, he would be the fifth president to win the award and the fourth to win in office, with Carter being the sole president to have won after leaving office.
