Barons girls’ varsity soccer tied with the Edison High School Chargers 0-0 on Tuesday.
At the beginning of the game, the team moved fast and aggressively against Edison, a tough opponent. The ball remained more on the Barons’ side, but the defense remained strong, deflecting goal attempts and repeatedly disrupting the Chargers’ possession.
“The hardest part of today’s game was defending Edison’s quick plays where they played around us,” defender sophomore Sarah Gomez said.
The Barons remained on the defensive for most of the first half, and by halftime the score was at 0-0.
Before the start of the second half, a moment of silence was held for an Edison student who had recently passed.
The second half was played mostly in mid-field, and the Barons pushed to Edison’s side. Shots were taken by the Barons but were blocked by Edison’s aggressive defense.
Because of this aggressive defense, the girls never stopped moving on the field. The battle for the ball continued throughout the second half as the girls passed the back and forth, but rarely near the goals.
“The highlights of the game were when we had some one-on-one runs with our strikers and their defense, specifically one that Simons had, and when Jenna and Zoe, two of our defenders, were able to make good tackles and clear the balls,” Gomez said.
