In a prosperous home match against Los Alamitos High School (LAHS), the Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) boys’ varsity tennis team left the Griffins in ruins with a score of 17-1.
Both sides came in today with high hopes as it was the beginning of their league matches. For the Griffins, there was a minor factor affecting them.
“I expected a lot from Los Al because usually, they have a really strong team,” senior Nathan Dang said. “But today, they were missing a lot of key players.”
Thus, both the singles and doubles lineup took the upper hand in their sets.
Doubles No. 1 senior co-captain Kai Rodriguez and Dang brought in a notable performance as they reigned 6-0 in every set. Doubles No. 2 junior Ethan Votran and junior Jared Nguyen stepped in with bright smiles and positive energy, which helped them outlast each of their opponents 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2. Other exceptional performances were from doubles No. 3 senior Albert Ly and junior Ninh Nguyen who won with scores of 6-1 in the first two sets and 6-0 in their last one.
The singles lineup successfully won all of their sets with ease beside one. Singles No. 1 freshman Colin Nguyen conquered over his opponents with a 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2 score, and singles No. 2 senior co-captain Benjamin Nguyen won 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2. Singles No. 3 sophomore Alan Ton played two sets, resulting in dominating scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Freshman Aaditya Khanuja subbed in for Ton in the last set but fell short against LAHS’s No. 1 singles.
All the players had a good rhythm and found themselves hitting a lot more consistently through the match. Colin Nguyen noted feeling proud that he did well in finishing points off quickly.
With the day being a success, the future is bright for the boys’ varsity tennis team in their journey towards league and CIF champions.
The next match will take place on April 21 and away at Corona del Mar High School.
