This Tuesday, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) girl’s varsity basketball team was defeated by the Corona del Mar (CdM) Sea Kings with the final score of 40-61. Despite the Lady Barons best efforts, they were unable to close the point margain, making this their second loss out of eight games played of the season.
The game started off with a tip-off to the Sea Kings, leading them to quickly make their first two-pointer of the night. Senior Caitlin Okawa followed with a two-pointer, but was swiftly outmatched by CdM’s impressive scoring. Junior Margaret Tengan and senior Kristen Ho both showed impressive offensive skills with their successful shots, but the quarter ended with the Sea Kings in the lead; 10 to 24.
Junior Madison Suekawa started the quarter off strong with a two-pointer, but the Sea Kings weren’t backing down either. They successful scored three-point after three-point, while the Barons struggled to get any leverage offensively. After many attempts, and good defensive plays all-around, junior Sarah Henry shot and scored, leaving the quarter at 15-33 with CdM still in the lead.
Following half-time, the Lady Barons came out with a new sense of aggression, mirroring their opponents. Ho came in strong, getting fouled back to back and earning FVHS four points in free throws. Although the team showed good hustling all-around, the Sea Kings defensive maneauvers were hard to match, along with their excellent shooting performance. But this did not deter the Lady Barons, and Ho soon scored their first three-pointer of the game, which she quickly followed up with a two.
With FVHS entering the final quarter of the game down twenty-two points, it did not seem hopeful for the Barons. But this only seemed to encourage keyplayers, including senior Bianca Crader and Okawa, to come back stronger with their defense. But after a handful of free throws and an excellent layup by Tengan, the game ended with the final score of 40-61, leaving the CdM Sea Kings victorious.
