Last Tuesday, the boys’ volleyball team played against the Marina Vikings and left with a 3-0 victory.
Despite the win over the Vikings, the scores were close for all three games, but due to good communication and the faults of the opposing team, the Barons came out on top. Key players include juniors Curtis Harper and Jovanni Dang.
“For our first home league game, the student section really set the atmosphere and got my adrenaline pumping,” Dang said.
As the first set started, the Barons started off the set testing the waters with the Vikings. Due to constant rallies between the teams and short serves, the ball traveled between them.
Ultimately, the Barons won the first set and were prepared to move on to the next game.
During the second set, the Vikings put up a fight. Both teams’ defenses were strong. Marina often hit the balls near the net, keeping the Barons on their toes. It cost them points for hitting the net or crossing the boundaries.
The team moved everywhere around the court to keep the ball up and to prevent Marina from scoring. The score went back and forth, with Marina leading for a couple of minutes and then Fountain Valley soon after.
Despite the minor setbacks, the team’s strong communication and constant defense against the Vikings won the set.
At the start of the third game, the hopes for the Barons were high. They started off with a lead in points, scoring aces which continued steadily throughout. The Vikings kept the Barons at the net, similar to the previous set, but the Barons surprised them with sharp and controlled attacks.
Striking down onto the Vikings, the Barons finished victorious in the third set. With this, the Barons effectively shut out the Vikings and concluded with a 3-0 win.
The boys’ next home game will be on Monday, Mar. 29 at 6 p.m.
