On Thursday, the Fountain Valley High School (FVHS)’s badminton team competed against John F. Kennedy High School (JFKHS) and finished with a 19-2 victory. Badminton showed outstanding performances and won all mixed doubles, girls’ doubles, boys’ doubles and girls’ singles matches.
Sophomore Sophie Ho and senior Minh Nguyen did not let their opponent surpass nine points, scoring 21-4 in a set during their mixed doubles match. Junior Remy Phan and senior Dimitri Nguyen skillfully played in both matches. Strong defense and offense power also came from senior Chau Tran and junior Kaden Nguyen during their second mixed doubles match.
“At the beginning of the games, I was really nervous, but throughout the game I eventually got used to the pace and the tactics the opponents were using,” Tran said. “With the help of my partner, we figured out what to do and that helped us win the games.”
Chau Tran and Ho and Phan and sophomore Charisse Nguyen dominated girl’s doubles.
“It was really easy because I already knew what to expect,” Ho said. “ The match was really fun and enjoyable because I don’t have to worry too much.”
Girls’ singles had great plays by juniors Vy Tran and Krystal Wong. Boys’ singles fought hard but unfortunately lost two very close matches.
More brilliant plays came from boys’ doubles who defeated their opponents in all four games.
Doubles player senior Max Vo cited teamwork and practice as what helped them beat JFKHS for the second time.
“What made our team perform so well at the game was because of our team training and cooperation with each other,” Vo said. “We used the previous knowledge we have on them to our advantage and beat them with the synergy of our team and partner. Set your heart ablaze.”
Badminton’s next game is at home against Cypress High School on Monday, Ap. 4 at 3:15 pm.
