As an aspiring young and talented artist, senior Zayna Reid does everything from articulating paintings to creating pieces of clothing. Her journey, her aspirations, and her future goals are what inspires her and keeps her going with her creative works.
Reid has radiated creativity practically her entire life, so it is no surprise that she naturally learns and picks up artistic skills very easily.
“When I was younger, I would paint with my sister just as a fun activity. I started getting more serious with painting over quarantine during my free time and I realized it was something that I really enjoyed doing,” Reid said.
Like those with a passion for art and self-expression, Reid continues to explore different mediums in any way possible. Since taking her first and only sewing class, she has created all different kinds of pieces, from her sewed pieces to knitted flowers of all colors.
“As a kid, I liked to sew terrible pieces of clothing just because I could never find anything that I liked that matched my style,” Reid said. “I really enjoyed the sewing class I took in middle school, so I took a fashion design class later in high school.”
With these skills that Reid has developed over time, she even created her own prom dress, like she did with green accents the previous year.
The artist doesn’t stop there, however. She also expresses her artistic self with unique makeup, through the use of bold shades of eyeshadows and star-shaped eyeliner.
“I like to express myself through flamboyant makeup looks because I want to look like a piece of art. I wouldn’t say that I necessarily do makeup to look prettier, but I want to look more interesting,” Reid said.
All of these creative outlets allow Reid a place to express herself and be satisfied and proud of her work.
One of the pieces that she is most proud of is one of her art pieces that she got paid to paint. She was given the opportunity to paint this project for her siblings’ ex-boyfriend, and as a token of her artwork as well as her hard work, she decided to keep it.
She has many hopes for the future, as she plans on transferring to either the University of California, Santa Barbara or the University of California, Santa Cruz to major in marketing.
With a great love for fashion and design of clothing, Reid plans to go into fashion design after college and pursue a career in this field. She wants to broaden her knowledge on how to craft more artistic pieces and even start styling and designing.
“Making clothes is such a fun way to express myself artistically, and I just really love fashion,” Reid said.
