In Friday’s game, the Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) Barons faced off against Huntington Beach High School (HBHS) Oilers. This special event was held on”pink-out day” to show support for breast cancer awareness.
The first quarter was primarily a hard-fought defensive standstill from both teams, with very little ground gained for either team. This changed in the last few seconds as the Oilers pushed close to the Baron endzone. However, the Barons’ defense held their own, and the first quarter ended 0-0.
To start the second quarter, the Oilers kicked off the ball, and it was caught at the 10-yard line by junior Nolan Olivares. At first down, Barons quarterback senior Noa Banua fumbled, bringing possession of the ball back into Oilers’ hands at the 10-yard line.
In the Oilers’ first down, their quarterback, junior Jaden Brown, handed off the ball to running back senior Tyler Young, who pierced through Baron’s defense to score a touchdown with 11:03 left on the clock. The Oilers elected to go for the two-point conversion, with the ball once more handed off to Young, who made a 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 0-8 in favor of the Oilers.
Barons receive possession of the ball, but in their next play, they couldn’t seem to break through Oiler’s defense.
With the Ball back in Oiler’s hands, in their first down, their quarterback Jaden brown attempted to pass the ball, but it was incomplete. In the Oilers
Second down, Tyler Young runs the ball into Baron’s endzone to score another touchdown, bringing the score to 0-14, and the Oilers are now set up for another 2-point conversion and its clean score to 0-16
Oilers kicked off the ball, which was caught by Olivares, who rushed it to the 20-yard line. He made crucial ground in this play, but it was not enough to gain a first down, and in the first down, the ball was passed to Young. Young ran the ball to gain 13 yards but was stopped by Olivares. In the Oilers’ second down, the ball was handed off to Troy Young, and he ran the ball another 7 yards and was controlled by Hayden Ezpinoza.
With the Oilers at the 23-yard line, their quarterback passed the ball to senior Justin Tauanuu and scored a touchdown. The score was now 0-22, followed by a one-point conversion, bringing the score to 0-23 for the Oilers with 5:13 left in the second quarter.
The ball was now back in Barons’ possession, and they capitalized on their first down to score their first down and complete a 13-yard pass. Banua passed the ball to Olivares once again, and he ran the ball into the Oilers’ endzone, bringing the score to 6-23.
Barons set up for a successful point conversion, bringing the score to 7-23 with 4:23 minutes left in the second quarter.
The Barons kicked off the ball, and it was caught by Young, who dashed 65 yards to bring the 30-yard line next play, the ball was passed off to Young, who completed another touchdown, bringing the score to 7-29. The Oilers set up for a successful one-point conversion, bringing the score to 7-30, to end the second quarter.
The start of the third quarter was relatively uneventful until the possession came back into the Oilers’ possession. In the third down, with 7 yards to go and the ball on the 11-yard line, the Oiler quarterback completed a short pass to Young, who completed the touchdown, bringing the score to 7-36.
The Oilers once again set up for a 2-point conversion, which was successful, with Young running the ball into the endzone, bringing the score to 38-7.
The Barons caught a kickoff from the Oilers and started on the 30-yard line. Banua passed the ball to junior Luke Taylor in the Barons’s first down, completing a 10-yard pass for the first Down Barons. In the next play, Banua threw another pass to Luke Tayler, who covered 13 more yards for another first down. Now at the 27-yard line, the Oilers attempted to sack Banua, but Barons’ defense held them off long enough for Banua to throw a 27-yard pass to Lucas Alexander to bring the score to 13-38 to complete the 3rd quarter.
The fourth quarter mirrored the first, with both teams coming to a defensive standstill to end the game with the score at 13-38.
The Barons’ next game will be against Edison High School in the Bell Game.
