The Fountain Valley High School girl’s varsity golf team went against Los Alamitos High School in a match at their home field, Mile Square Park last Thursday afternoon. They lost with a final score of 193-103.
The girls arrived at the field 30 to 45 minutes early to warm up before the game. As this game was Senior Night, this would be Head Coach Carter Keyser’s last time coaching the two seniors Kassidy Vongxay, Kylie Phi, and Dakota Lam before CIF, which cast a bittersweet mood on the team.
“I’m very excited that it’s our last game. Not because it is the last game, but because I get to spend the last game with all of my close friends that are on the team,” Vongxay said.
For the game, the team was split up into three pairs, with one person playing alone. Each of the four groups was up against two players from Los Alamitos The pairings were:
1. Senior Kassidy Vongxay and senior Kylie Phi
2. Senior Dakota Lam and sophomore Megan Vo
3. Junior Ruby Bui and sophomore Carli McCormick
4. Freshman Baothu Nguyen
The individual scores ranked:
1. Lam: 36 strokes
2. Phi: 36 strokes
3. Vongxay: 38 strokes
4. Vo: 42 strokes
5. McCormick: 51 strokes
6. Bui: 53 strokes
7. Nguyen: 46 strokes
At the end of the game, Vongxay, Phi, and Lam were each given a gift and a bouquet of flowers to commemorate the game. Although the girls lost the match, the celebration of their friendship and memories made for a memorable Senior Night together.
CIF qualifiers took place this week on Monday October 16th and Tuesday on the 17th. Two players, Phi and Vo, qualified to play at CIF next week.
“I’m hoping we get [many players on] our team to qualify and I’m hoping to see some of our individuals go deeper into the tournament,” Keyser said.
