“Anything that you might need, I’ve got inside for you,” Backpack said.
In the television series “Dora the Explorer,” Backpack is an essential supporting character for Dora and her adventures. With her trusty backpack, she has traversed jungles, climbed mountains and crossed rivers, showcasing the unparalleled functionality of her carryall companion.
At Fountain Valley High School, students have replaced their trusty backpacks with tote bags due to their fashion-forwardness and supposed sustainability. However, what started as a grocery store initiative to provide reusable bags, exploded into a collector’s item. Instead of one reusable bag, people have dozens upon dozens of tote bags — ultimately defeating its original purpose.
Beyond being yet another article of materialism, tote bags lack comfort. Dora’s ability to navigate through any terrain can be attributed to the fact that backpacks distribute weight evenly across both shoulders. The ergonomic design of backpacks ensures optimal comfort, allowing you to focus on the adventure. Meanwhile, tote bags leave a one-shoulder strain that requires its user to switch off from one shoulder to the other, especially as the mass of the luggage begins to increase.
Dora, with her map and gadgets, knows the importance of keeping things organized on her journey. Backpacks offer multiple compartments and pockets, allowing you to stow away your essentials neatly. From laptops to water bottles to pencil cases, everything has a designated place, making it easier to locate items when you need them most.
Tote bags lack this level of organization, leaving you to rummage through a bottomless pit of belongings in search of your keys or wallet.
Backpacks are able to endure countless adventures due to their construction of nylon or canvas. As such, it is capable of withstanding the rigors of daily use and outdoor escapades. On the other hand, tote bags may not hold up as well under heavy loads or rough conditions because they are often made with lighter materials and flimsy straps.
The choice is up to you. Just keep in mind that Dora would not be able to do all that she could without her backpack.
