The Fountain Valley girls’ golf played against Los Alamitos High School in a league match last Tuesday, at their home field in Mile Square Park. The Lady Barons lost with a score of 194-222.
Although they were defeated, the girls refused to let this defeat champion their ambitions of ending this season successfully.
“This match was pretty rocky for us as a team, going against the number one team in our league does that … However, from the start to now, there has been improvement from everyone … so we are hoping to close [the season] out with a win,” junior Megan Vo, captain of the varsity girls golf team, said.
The team split into four groups, each with a pair facing off against a pair from Los Alamitos.
The pairings were:
- Junior Megan Vo and senior Ruby Bui
- Junior Carli Gormick and freshman Liliana Garcia
- Sophomores Baothu Nguyen and Kayla Trans
- Senior Bella Sanchez and freshman Tracy Nguyen
The individual scores ranked:
- Vo: 36
- Tracy Nguyen: 39
- Baothu Nguyen: 49
- Trans: 49
- Bui: 49
- McCormick: 52
- Garcia: 56
- Sanchez: 59
Vo was a standout player, scoring an even par of 36 while the other girls were over par.
“I was pretty content with my performance this round,” Vo said.
Even with an outstanding performance, Vo strives to work on any areas needing improvement.
“I hope to improve my short game … I try to focus on lag putting and set up different situations for myself during practice,” Vo said.
After the match, head coach Carter Keyser expressed his sentiments about the team’s performance:
“I was very proud of the team. We had one of our lowest scores this year,” Keyser said. “I think the girls are finding their stride and really starting to play well. I would still like us to improve on our short game.”
With only a limited amount of time before the Sunset League Finals, the Lady Barons plan on polishing their short game and ultimately reducing their overall scores for future matches. Finals will take place on October 22 and October 23 at 10:00 a.m. with the location to be determined.
