America loves football. Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) loves football; cheering on our Barons and growing our close-knit culture. Much of this unity is because of our student section, the FV Kingdom, a vast group of Barons present at — you guessed it — every football game. But what about our other sports?

Unfortunately, the student section does not translate to many of our other athletic groups, resulting in a noticeable lack of spirit during and after football season. Throughout the first semester, the Associated Student Body (ASB) hosts spirit-building events — including Bell Week.

Bell Week is one of the most spirited weeks of the year, filled with activities including the Glow Show, an annual assembly to rally anticipation for the Bell Game, a rivalry game against Edison High School (EHS). Every student enjoys this long-term feud, yet many of our other sports that compete against the Chargers don’t receive publicity.

ASB and the FV Kingdom’s Instagram accounts provide much of the promotion for athletic events, mostly football and boys’ basketball, but not much for other sports. However, ASB has many responsibilities other than supporting every group. How can we uplift the spirit while giving ASB a breather?

Support the ASB’s efforts in fostering spirit! You don’t have to attend every game, but perhaps every EHS game fueled by a mutual, friendly hatred for the Chargers would be a start — such as the Crosstown Cup, a multi-sport tournament created in 2017 to showcase each school’s athletic abilities. In addition to the Crosstown Cup, girls’ flag football recently began “The Battle of the Cup,” a new tradition mirroring the Bell Game to promote inclusivity.

Besides ASB promotion, the Five-Star App can be used to encourage attendance. If a student were to attend any of the such events, they would receive points that may be used for prizes, such as discounted dances or priority seating for assemblies or games. Utilizing the features of the Five-Star system will be beneficial in building student culture.

Cultivating Baron pride requires effort from all. Our student spirit should not decline after the end of America’s favorite sport. Support your fellow Barons by packing the FV Kingdom!
