Live updates: the 2024 general election results in Fountain Valley

On November 5, the United States general election will be held, with races for the presidency, governorships and federal and local legislatures occurring across the country. 

Follow Baron Banner’s election coverage as we provide results to local elections in the Fountain Valley (FV) community, covering the FV City Council, 70th District of the State Assembly, 45th District of the House of Representatives and both the Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach Union High School Districts. 

In California, polls will close at 8 p.m., but Baron Banner will update this article and our social media throughout the night as voting results are reported. The source of voting results will be from the OC Registrar of Voters and The New York Times. 

About 73.6% of registered voters in Orange County have voted. 

Huntington Beach Union High School District

In Trustee Area Two, nonprofit program director and educational advocate Christine Hernandez is running unopposed and will be the newest member of the Board of Trustees.

In Trustee Area Three, incumbent Board of Trustee and retired registered nurse Susan Henry and teacher Leanne Coral are vying for the seat. Henry has served on the board since 2000 and is currently the Vice President of the Board of Trustees. 

Dr. Michael Simons, current board member, will have his term expire this year. 

*Henry leads the race by a large margin, gathering 65.6% of votes to Coral’s 34.4%. 

Fountain Valley School District

There are two open seats on the Fountain Valley School District’s governing board. Current incumbent and Fountain Valley High School English teacher Steve Schultz is running for re-election against Huy Tran, a local assistant principal, at Santiago High School, and Ashley Ramirez, a education administrator. 

*Schultz has a comfortable lead over both Tran and Ramirez, while Ramirez barely holds on to a razor thin margin over Tran. Schultz has 45.0% of the votes, Ramirez with 27.8% and Tran with 27.2%. 

Fountain Valley City Council

Both incumbents, current Mayor Glenn Grandis and Vice Mayor Ted Bui, are running for re-election. Software developer Alicia “Rudy” Huebner and speaker and board secretary Katy Wright are challenging the incumbents for the two open seats. 

*The incumbents, Grandis and Bui, currently have a lead over Huebner and Wright. Bui holds 35.6% of votes, Grandis with 33.0%, Huebner with 18.2% and Wright with 13.2%

Orange County Board of Supervisors, 1st District

With the resignation of former Supervisor Andrew Do after he pled guilty to federal bribery charges, Cypress Councilwoman Frances Marquez and State Senator Janet Nguyen are looking to fill the vacancy in the Orange County Board of Supervisors. 

*Nguyen far outpaces Marquez with a 22-point margin. Nguyen has 61.2% of the votes to Marquez with 38.8%. 

State Assembly, 70th District

Incumbent Assemblyman Tri Ta (Republican) will be looking to be re-elected for his second term, while attorney and business owner Jimmy Pham (Democrat) seeks to challenge him for the seat. 

*Ta maintains a strong lead with a 9-point lead, garnering 54.7% of votes to Pham’s 45.3%. 

House of Representatives, 45th District

The candidates running for the 45th District of the United States House of Representatives are incumbent Republican Michelle Steel and Democrat Derek Tran, a lawyer and veteran. Steel, who was most recently an Orange County Supervisor, will be seeking her third term.

The race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the region, with the winner being crucial toward which party will hold the majority in the House of Representatives. 

*Tran manages to grab a very slight edge over Steel, leading with 50.01% of votes to Steel’s 49.99%, with 94% of the votes counted.
