Our generation lives in a media-saturated world, with it being common to consume hours of shows, movies, TikToks or other forms of content every day. Thousands of products and lifestyles are constantly promoted to the youth, yet one remains popular throughout the generations — the YOLO, or “you only live once” mindset.
The YOLO mentality is one that encourages people to live in the moment and do whatever their heart desires. The term is a modern version of the Latin phrase “carpe diem”, which signifies “seize the day.”
However, with the changing time periods comes advancements in the vernacular, and the term YOLO has slowly evolved to what Gen Z coins “do it for the plot.” Carrying a similar intention, the mindset pushes people to see themselves as the main character of the story which is their life. Each person is in charge of the outlook of every moment — good or bad — and every action is merely a plot point for the larger narrative.
If there is any microtrend you choose to hop on, let it be the “do it for the plot.” Still hesitant? Below are some of the many benefits of being the writer, director and star of your life.
New experiences: the stories you’ll tell forever
High school is the perfect breeding ground for unforgettable memories. Every day is a chance to try something new — whether it’s auditioning for a sport, joining the debate team even if public speaking terrifies you or saying yes to that camping trip with friends who totally don’t know how to pitch a tent.
When you embrace new experiences, you’re collecting stories that will make your future self proud. Imagine this: would you rather tell your college roommate about how you stayed in bed bingeing yet another Netflix series, or about the time you faced your fear of heights on bungee jumping? Exactly.
The present is a gift
With homework piling up and college applications looming, it’s easy to get caught up in stressing about the future. When you focus on the here and now, you stop worrying about things you can’t change or control. That means fully enjoying the thrill of a last-minute hangout, soaking in the excitement of prom night or simply laughing with your friends until your stomach hurts. These moments are fleeting, but they’re also precious. Don’t let them slip away while you’re busy overthinking.
Personal growth
Growth isn’t a smooth, easy journey — it’s often unpredictable and happens in ways you least expect. Yet, every time you step outside your comfort zone, you’re giving yourself a chance to grow. Spontaneity is like a fast pass to self-discovery. It forces you to adapt, think on your feet, and learn more about what you’re capable of.
The beauty of spontaneity is that it doesn’t require perfection; it just requires action. Whether it’s striking up a conversation with a stranger or saying “yes” to an unplanned adventure, these moments of stepping into the unknown are where personal growth thrives. Spontaneity doesn’t need complicated; simple side tangents such as discovering new hobbies or going on a deep dive about a topic that interests you can also open up doors to unexpected growth. Spontaneity teaches you to embrace uncertainty, push boundaries, and ultimately, become a more capable and dynamic version of yourself.
Do it for the plot
As you are “doing it for the plot,” remember that the main focus here is you — not your friends or social media audience. It’s okay to live bravely, to make interesting choices and to do things that will create the best story, but be sure to hold the intention that you are doing it for your own narrative, not for others and their approval.
Ask any high school senior, and they will say that the four years fly by faster than a microtrend. Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage in a cap and gown, wondering where the time went. So why not make the most of it?
