The Fountain Valley boys’ golf team went club to club with Edison on Thursday in a league game at their home course at Mile Square Park. As green grass and a blue sky framed each player dressed in white, the Barons and Chargers continued to exchange strokes until Edison finally made a breakthrough.

The Barons put up a fight but ultimately lost with a final score of 181-187.

“We played very well, but Edison was just too tough,” coach Carter Keyser said.

The pairings for this week’s game were:

  1. Ethan Lam and Evan Phi
  2. Jackie Yenson and Max Lang
  3. Nam Nguyen and Michael Vatnsdal
  4. Ethan Surjana and Chase Keyser

The individual scores ranked:

  1. Ethan Lam: 36
  2. Evan Phi: 36
  3. Jackie Yenson: 37
  4. Nam Nguyen: 39
  5. Michael Vatnsdal: 39
  6. Ethan Surjana: 40
  7. Max Lang: 40
  8. Chase Keyser: 48

Juniors Ethan Lam and Evan Phi both scored an even par for the Barons.

Though slightly over par with just one stroke, senior Jackie Yenson is committed to improving his craft one tee at a time.

“It’s just a lot of practice – practicing every single shot I think I would hit and playing this course over and over again,” Yenson said.

Though they ultimately suffered a loss to Edison, the Barons are sticking together to boost morale. If there’s anything stronger than the winds the Barons experienced on the course today, it’s the bond they have with each other.

“[They] are more than just teammates. To me, they’re my friends. I’ve been really close to them recently, and I’m grateful to have them,” senior Ethan Surjana said.

Throughout their practices, they constantly work to figure out areas of improvement so they can do their best at every game. On days when they are faced with some tough competition on the course, Yenson strives to have a positive attitude.

“[A good mindset to have] would be to [just not be] too hard on yourself and don’t take it too seriously. Even though we want to play well, there’s bound to be days where we don’t,” Yenson said.

“I think our players played very well,” Keyser said. “The score we shot yesterday would have beaten many teams. I was very proud of them!”

The Barons’ next game will be at the Mesa Verde Golf Course against Estancia High School on Tuesday, Mar. 4. at 3:00 p.m.
