From early morning practices to game-time excitement, cheerleaders play a crucial role in energizing the crowd. For senior Emily Rostomian, cheerleading has been more than just a sport— it’s been a driving force that’s shaped who she is. Now, as she commits to cheer at the collegiate level with Vanguard University, her passion for cheer will continue to grow.

Rostomian’s inspiration for cheering started because of her love for sports. She felt drawn to the idea of being close and involved in athletics, which allowed her to learn about her passion for cheer.

“It’s been a really good experience,” Rostomian said. “I’ve [gained] skills, not just for on the football field I cheer on, but also skills in life like how to talk to people, how to communicate and be more responsible.”

Rostomian is no stranger to hard work. She first joined the Pep Squad as a back spot during her sophomore year and has been a member of both the sideline and competitive teams, showcasing her spirit and talent.

In the last three years, Rostomian has also struggled with confidence. She explains how she’s felt lost and uneasy in her position, but through time, she learned to have trust in herself.

“I always felt like I was behind somebody or else,” Rostomian said. “But, I’ve learned that I just need to believe in myself and have that confidence in myself. That keeps me going.”

Cheer has not only brought on new lessons but also new relationships. Rostomian highlights her friendships with her teammates and her experience at Las Vegas Jamz Nationals 2024 where the Competitive Cheer Team placed fourth in their category.

“My favorite part [about] being on cheer is just being with the girls, and having a support system,” Rostomian said. “[I love] going to practice from school, and talking to them, and telling them about my day and stuff like that.”

As she wraps up her senior year at FVHS, she is beginning to look toward the future and her life at Vanguard University. Not only is she committed to their stunt team, but she plans to major in Communications and work in Sports Management and Business for the National Football League or Major League Baseball once she graduates.

“It has my major in sports media and communications. That was my top thing. Because academics are always first, in my opinion,” Rostomian said. “Then for cheer, it’s just a really great division two stunt program, and the coach is amazing. I have so much respect for all the girls that I met there, and it’s just a really good atmosphere.”

After years of hard work and dedication, Rostomian is ready to fly from the nest and start a new beginning. One piece of advice she gives to underclassmen is to have faith in yourself.

“My advice is to bet on yourself and to just keep going,” Rostomian said. “Don’t go doubting things because nobody cares what you’re doing. Just so don’t worry.”

So if you feel afraid to try something new, believe in yourself because we are all much more capable than we think. Embrace your strengths and trust your journey, so one day you can achieve your dreams like Emily Rostomian.
