Strike after strike is pitched for Los Alamitos, and the score consistently favors the Griffins. A hit bounces off the hitter to give the Barons an advantage in an early inning, yet decisive line drives in the fifth inning declare Los Alamitos victors. Baserunners weren’t enough for the Barons as they lost the first of three matchups, but glimmers of hope shimmered with the Barons’ pitchers.

The Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) (15-10 overall, 8-7 league) varsity baseball team lost against the Los Alamitos (LA) Griffins (16-8 overall, 9-7-8 league) last Tuesday. The loss saw the Griffins dominate the FVHS and win with a score of 2-6.

Sophomore Drake Robinson proved crucial in both consistent hits and base percentage, while senior Anthony Zamora stole bases to keep the Barons competitive during the middle innings. Logan Hunt also shined as a pitcher, striking out multiple hitters and ending Los Alamitos’ innings early.

The first two runs of the game were scored in the top of the first inning by the Griffins, followed by a shortstop at third base. Hill threw multiple strikes, and foul balls ended the Griffins’ offensive plays temporarily with a strikeout before the Griffins scored two more runs to extend their lead to 0-4. Another strikeout from Hill was enough to stagnate Los Al for the first inning, but the Barons had to launch a herculean effort to tie up the game early. Unfortunately, the Barons managed to score only one run in the bottom; the Barons struck out the first at bat and proceeded to gain only three bases the next three plays.

A strikeout showed promise for a close inning at the top of the second, and two caught balls marked the final out for the Griffins before they started defense. An early strikeout and two caught balls ended the inning for the Barons to keep the score at 1-4.

FVHS’ dominance was put on full display at the beginning of the third inning, with Los Al’s efforts met with hard-railed pitches raining down upon their hitters. Eventually, their offense quieted down, and they maintained solid defense throughout the inning.

A shortstop by junior Ethan Cortez and a caught ball killed the Griffins’ offense early on. A hit batter advanced LA to second base, yet another Hill strikeout and weak hit reinvigorated the defense and closed out the top of the inning, pointlessly.

High hits by the Barons weren’t enough for them to mount a person on base, as the Griffins’ offense dominated pop-flies and ground-outs for the entire third inning, leaving another period scoreless for both teams.

Heading into the fourth inning, the Barons looked to close the gap early on by acquiring one strikeout and an out through excellent ball play from the outfielders. Yet a base on balls proved to be crucial for the Griffins, who capitalized on that and a line drive to score a fifth point against the Barons, breaking their three-inning scoreless streak. The Barons managed to tie the inning after sophomore Isaac Grimaldo’s hit allowed his teammate to get FVHS’ second point of the game, which would be the Barons’ last of the entire game.

The top of the fifth inning also contained the Griffins’ last run after loading the bases with a failure to score more than two points. Hill’s strikes and base awareness prevented the Griffins from exploiting their lead further, but at the other end, the Barons couldn’t finish their hits despite senior Tyler Peshke’s efforts, leaving the score 2-6.

The final two innings were uneventful, especially due to the 0-0 scoreline held by the two teams. The game cooled down for much of the last inning; the Barons carefully ensured the Griffins didn’t win in a blowout, the Griffins prioritizing the win over a larger scoreline due to mistakes and careful pitching. Despite powerful hits from both teams, both outfields did an excellent job of containing the offense, with only one defensive error per team throughout the match.

Despite the Barons’ efforts in tying the game early on, the Griffins overwhelmed FVHS with powerful kills to narrowly win and improve their conference record. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday as they face each other at 3:15 p.m.
