On Tuesday, April 22, the Fountain Valley Barons’ tennis team faced a tough opponent, falling 1-17 to the Corona Del Mar (CDM) Sea Kings in a league matchup at home. Despite the score, the Barons showcased effort, resilience and moments of strong individual play.
The highlight of the afternoon came from Singles 3, junior Eric Tran, who secured the team’s lone win in the final round, defeating CDM’s number 3 singles player with a score of 6-4 with his consistent groundstrokes, quick footwork, and strategic shot placement throughout the set. Tran kept rallies long and frustrated his opponent.
“I just kept reminding myself to stay focused, point by point. Getting that win felt good, even in a tough match like this,” Tran said.
Fountain Valley’s Singles 1, freshman Tri Le, fought hard across three sets, utilizing his huge serves and forehands, but couldn’t break through CDM’s top-seeded player. Singles 2, junior Logan Palmer, who subbed in for junior Fares Camel, made it to the third round, but ultimately lost a hard-fought match that CDM controlled from the baseline.

In doubles play, the Barons were aggressive but ultimately came short in every match. Doubles 1 pair senior Vincent Nguyen and freshman Sho Takishima showed chemistry and sharp net play, especially in the second and third rounds, but fell with the scores of 0-6, 4-6, 4-6.
“We really found our rhythm in the second set, but CDM just kept the pressure on and responded to every shot,” Takishima said.
Doubles 2 pair juniors Dylan Nguyen and Brayden Langhans lost their sets with the scores of 3-6, 0-6, 2-6, but showed strong hustle and communication throughout.
“We’re still improving every match. We just recently began playing together and these losses help us figure out what we need to work on.” Dylan Nguyen said.
Doubles 3 senior pair Raymond Phan and Nathan Luper also fell in straight sets, but played with determination and energy from start to finish.

CDM’s skills and consistency were clear, with strong performances across the board. Their aggressive net play, reliable first serves and ability to close out long rallies proved too much for the Barons this time.
As the season comes to an end, the Barons will return to practice this week to prepare for the league finals, where they hope to turn lessons learned into results and eventually rematch the CDM Sea Kings.
