The best way to foster a community and meet new people is through communication. One of the most well-known ways to communicate with new people is by speaking their language. At Fountain Valley High School, you’re in luck since there’s a new club that will help you with both of those aspects.

Growing up with deaf parents, junior Vy Le saw the struggles they faced when communicating with other people. To support their community, she created the American Sign Language (ASL) Club.

“I truly want to help others better understand the Deaf community and recognize the challenges they face every day,” Le said.

With a goal of spreading awareness about the Deaf community, the club has weekly meetings where members learn ASL through sign guessing challenges and name spelling contests.

In the future, the club plans to make a lasting impact not only within the school, but on the broader community. They are planning on doing social events, including watching films that feature Deaf representation and joining volunteering opportunities at Deaf community events. They also plan on inviting guest speakers with inspiring stories to help members connect to people who are part of the community.

“With ASL Club, we mainly focus on finding social events where members can practice and learn American Sign Language together in a fun and supportive way,” Le said.

With fundraiser money from sales such as the food that will be sold during Fall Fest, Le plans to buy club shirts for the members, allowing them to be more visible and represented during volunteering events. All remaining funds will be donated to Deaf families and Deaf awareness programs.

“Our goal isn’t just to teach ASL, but to also build understanding and connection through communication,” Le said.

The next Monday you’re free at lunch, don’t be afraid to stop by room 133 and help spread awareness about the Deaf community!
