On Jan. 9, Fountain Valley High School boys’ basketball (2-2 league, 18-2 overall) went head-to-head against the formidable Huntington Beach High School Oilers (1-3 league, 10-10 overall). The game was a nail-biting match that had the student section on the edge of their seat, or the bleachers. In the end, the Barons fought hard for their victory, adding to their hard-earned wins as the second home game of the season.

Senior James Pennington starts off the game on the right foot for the Barons with his skillful defense against the Oilers. However, senior Grant Wilson’s first attempt at the scoreboard bounces off the rim and lands the ball back in the Oilers’ hands.
A minute into the first quarter, the Oilers make the first shot, driving the Barons to play hard if they want to gain a lead. Consequently, senior Kenneth Nguyen puts two points on the board for the Barons with his perfect free throws after a foul two minutes in.
Despite Nguyen’s strong blocking, the Oilers score once again. Soon after, an impressive play by the Barons results in a successful shot made by junior Isaac Chinchilla with an assist by Nguyen.

Seniors Drew Chinchilla and Kaden Khuu tactfully work together to defend against the Oilers. With 1:29 minutes left in the quarter, senior Sami Ghanem is put on the court–a well-paid-off decision by the boys’ coaches, as Ghanem puts on a strong defense. Despite the Barons’ efforts, the boys fall behind with a score of 10-14 by the end of the quarter.
As the second quarter begins, the synergy between Ghanem and Nguyen is something to behold, with Ghanem assisting Nguyen perfectly. Nguyen shows off the joint efforts between teammates when he brings the score to 12-17, with an additional point right after from a satisfying free throw.
Halfway through the second quarter, Khuu significantly pushes the Barons forward with strong efforts, making shot after shot. Senior Kyler Yee assists his teammates through unbeatable blocking and quick passes.
Pushing forward with their best efforts, Khuu makes a stellar two-pointer with 1:43 left in the quarter. Still, the Oilers quickly gain the advantage and Nguyen is found isolated with the ball and blocked by his opponents. Eventually making a pass to Wilson, Wilson’s shot bounces off the backboard right as the buzzer sounds, signaling the end of the first half.
As the Barons return at the start of the third quarter, a palpable energy shift pulsates through the gym. After a foul for the Oilers, Khuu sinks three free throws, progressing the Barons’ score. The two teams finally reach a tie of 32-32 when Nguyen takes the rebound and makes the layup.
The Barons take the lead for the first time in the game when Nguyen once again takes the rebound and makes a perfect basket, advancing their score to 34-32. With a tough back-and-forth between the Barons and the Oilers, the quarter ends with a score of 41-39–a close start to the final quarter.
The Oilers start off the fourth quarter with a two-pointer that ties the score 41-41. The Barons seem to gain strength after seeing this, putting on their best and hardest defense as key players including Nguyen, Khuu, Isaac Chinchilla and Drew Chinchilla make significant advances for the team.

After reaching another tie of 46-46, Nguyen’s perfect jumper put the Barons back in the lead with 48-46. Play after play, the crowd grows more and more lively. The Barons continue to score, with shots made by Khuu and Nguyen. Nguyen’s layup drives the student section wild as the Barons increase their lead to 52-48.
Isaac Chinchilla takes the rebound and makes the final shot of the game, ending with a score of 56-49, putting another win in the books for the Barons’ season.
The Barons’ next game is against Los Alamitos Griffins at Los Alamitos High School tonight, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
